Driving Habits You Should Leave Behind In 2019

Don’t let this happen to you. This is not the way you want to become a statistic. Everyone has bad driving habits, but some of them are worse than others and can put you in harm’s way. As we head into a new decade, this is a great time to release some bad habits and the ones that can hurt you are a great place to start.

Tailgating: When you don’t leave enough room between you and the other cars around you, you are asking for an accident to happen. There’s a reason there is a 3-4 second rule and that should be expanded upon when the weather conditions aren’t at their best.

Not using your turn signal: Not only is this rude, but it’s dangerous as well. If someone doesn’t know you’re coming over or turning in front of them, it can lead to them not giving you enough room for your transition or far worse.

Blind spots: When you don’t check your blind spots and simply just start to merge, you don’t know what’s there. This can cause great anxiety not to mention a terrible accident. Look over your shoulder to minimize the blind spot and reduce the risk of an accident.

Speeding: When you speed, you don’t have as much control over your vehicle. It’s harder to stop when necessary and can keep you from seeing what’s going on around you.

Distracted driving is the number one bad driving habit: Stay off your phones for anything. Use voice commands when needed and program your GPS before pulling away from the curb. That text or phone call can wait.

There are plenty of others we could add to this list, but this is a great start! What would you add? Consider taking a driving course even if you are a well-seasoned driver as a way to freshen your knowledge about safe driving. This can also be a good way to remind yourself of what are good and not-so-good driving habits.
